A fifth of the world's LNG passes this point

Qatar, the world's largest LNG exporter alongside the US and Australia, ships virtually every cargo through the Strait of Hormuz from its Ras Laffan terminal. Add LNG from Abu Dhabi's Das Island and LPG from across the Gulf, and roughly 20% of global LNG trade plus a major share of seaborne LPG depends on this single waterway — with no pipeline alternative at all.

Recognising gas carriers on the map

LNG carriers are unmistakable: 280–345 metres long, running at 19+ knots (among the fastest merchant ships afloat), with destinations like RAS LAFFAN, INCHEON, FUTTSU or ZEEBRUGGE. Qatar's Q-Flex (210,000 m³) and Q-Max (266,000 m³) classes are the largest gas ships ever built. LPG carriers — mostly VLGCs of about 230 metres — lift propane and butane for Asian petrochemical plants and heating markets.

The LNG schedule is relentless

Unlike crude tankers, which wait for cargoes and orders, LNG carriers run near-fixed itineraries tied to liquefaction slots and regas terminal windows. A Q-Max making 19 knots eastbound out of the strait every few hours is the normal rhythm; interruptions to that cadence are among the earliest, clearest signals that something is wrong in the Gulf.

Why LNG tracking matters for energy markets

European and Asian gas prices react to Hormuz risk even faster than oil, because LNG supply is so concentrated and storage is thin. Traders watch laden LNG transits per day, destination switches mid-voyage (cargoes re-sold on the water), and speed changes that signal deliberate slow-steaming.
